Social Awareness

Music in Response takes its lead from the speech Leonard Bernstein delivered to the United Jewish Fund two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Known as “An Artist’s Response to Violence,” the speech addresses the manner in which musicians might best use their abilities in the aftermath of tragedy:

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”  ~Leonard Bernstein

Akin to their fellow citizens of the world, musicians experience the same onslaught of ramifications stemming from various issues of the day, be they the effects of climate change, shelter insecurity, violence or a world-wide pandemic. However, by the very nature of their art, musicians can serve as a source of healing in a way no other constituency can.

It is with this in mind we highlight here various selections which target the social issues of our day, with the aspiration of opening minds, touching hearts and healing wounds through music.
